Slow on the uptake

Definition

Taking longer than usual to understand or grasp new information, concepts, or situations.

Etymology

The term 'uptake' originally referred to the upward shaft in a furnace or chimney that draws air or smoke upward. By the 1800s, it was used metaphorically for mental absorption - how quickly the mind 'draws up' or absorbs new information.

Kelly Says

The industrial metaphor is particularly apt because just as some furnaces have better draft than others, people naturally vary in how quickly they process information. It's a gentler way of describing different learning speeds than many alternatives!
