Definition
Past tense of sniff: to breathe in air through the nose, or to show disapproval or contempt by inhaling sharply through the nose.
Etymology
Imitative origin from Old English, related to Old Norse 'snyfja.' The sound itself mirrors the action—it's onomatopoeia. The meaning of contempt developed metaphorically from the physical act of rejecting odors.
Kelly Says
Sniffing is one of the few words where the sound of the word imitates its meaning—say 'sniff' aloud and you're basically doing it, which is why onomatopoeia feels so satisfying to use.
