Societies

/səˈsaɪətiz/ noun

Definition

Organized groups of people living together in communities with shared laws, traditions, and values. Also refers to associations or organizations formed for particular purposes.

Etymology

From Latin 'societas' meaning 'fellowship, association', from 'socius' (companion, ally). Entered English via Old French 'societe' in the 14th century, initially referring to companionship before expanding to mean organized communities.

Kelly Says

The word 'society' originally just meant 'companionship' but evolved to encompass humanity's greatest achievement - large-scale cooperation among strangers. Every society is essentially an expanded form of friendship, held together by shared stories and rules rather than personal bonds.
