Sol

/soʊl/ noun

Definition

The fifth note of the musical scale in solmization (do, re, mi, fa, sol). Also refers to the sun in various contexts, including astronomy and mythology.

Etymology

From Latin 'sol' meaning 'sun', also adopted into musical terminology through medieval Latin hymns. In music, it comes from the first syllable of 'solve' in 'Ut queant laxis', an 11th-century hymn used to teach musical scales.

Kelly Says

The word 'sol' beautifully connects two fundamental human experiences - music and sunlight. Whether we're singing scales or studying astronomy, this simple syllable links the rhythm of music to the rhythm of day and night, showing how ancient peoples understood both as cosmic harmonies.
