Spamming

/ˈspæmɪŋ/ verb

Definition

The act of sending unsolicited bulk messages, typically via email or other electronic communication platforms.

Etymology

From the canned meat product SPAM (1937), which gained the meaning of unwanted repetitive content through a 1970 Monty Python sketch where 'Spam' was repeated annoyingly. Internet users adopted this in the 1980s for unwanted repetitive messages.

Kelly Says

The transformation of SPAM from a wartime protein source to a synonym for digital annoyance shows how cultural references can completely redefine words. The Monty Python sketch was so influential that it literally changed the English language, proving that comedy can have lasting linguistic impact.
