Definition
A handheld firework that produces bright sparks and light, or something that sparkles brightly.
Etymology
From 'sparkle' (to shine with small bright flashes) plus the agent suffix '-er' (one who does something). 'Sparkle' likely comes from Middle English and has Germanic roots related to 'spark'.
Kelly Says
Sparklers became a Fourth of July icon partly because they're safer than bigger fireworks—the idea that you could hand a bright, glowing stick to a kid at a celebration was brilliant product innovation that shaped American summer traditions.
