Spectator

/ˈspɛkteɪtər/ noun

Definition

A person who watches at a show, game, or other event; an observer who does not participate.

Etymology

From Latin spectator, formed from spectare (intensive form of specere, meaning 'to watch') + -ator (agent suffix), literally meaning 'one who watches.' The word entered Middle English through Old French spectateur, maintaining its Latin structure and meaning.

Kelly Says

Spectator is the purest expression of 'specere' in action - it's literally 'one who looks'! Notice how it shares DNA with 'spectacular' (worthy of being watched) and 'spectacle' (something to be watched). All three words remind us that human entertainment has always been fundamentally about the act of looking and being looked at!
