Definition
A complex, wedge-shaped bone at the base of the skull that forms part of the eye socket, nasal cavity, and skull base. It houses the pituitary gland in a depression called the sella turcica.
Etymology
From Greek 'sphen' meaning wedge and 'eidos' meaning form, literally 'wedge-shaped.' The term reflects the bone's distinctive angular appearance when viewed from above.
