Stadiums

/ˈsteɪdiəmz/ noun

Definition

Large structures with seats where crowds gather to watch sports, concerts, or other events.

Etymology

From Greek 'stadion', originally a unit of length (about 600 feet) used to measure running distances, then applied to the actual running track, then to the entire arena surrounding it. The Romans adopted it and built massive versions.

Kelly Says

The original Greek stadion was exactly 600 feet—the length of the sprint race—so calling the whole building after the measurement is like calling an NFL field a '100-yarder'! Some ancient stadiums still stand after 2,000 years.
