Staffs

/stæfs/ noun

Definition

Groups of people who work together in a workplace, or plural of 'staff' (a long stick used as a walking aid).

Etymology

From Old English 'stæf,' meaning a stick or pole. 'Staff' as a group of people evolved from military usage where officers would carry staffs as symbols of authority, and the 'staff' of officers became the whole leadership team.

Kelly Says

The word 'staff' has two totally different meanings that share the same origin—a literal stick, and a group of workers—because military officers carried stafves (sticks) as symbols of authority, so 'the staff' eventually meant the officers themselves!
