Definition
A statistician is a person who specializes in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting numerical data. They design studies, choose methods, and help turn raw numbers into useful information for decisions.
Etymology
From “statistics” + “-ian,” meaning “person concerned with statistics.” The root goes back to New Latin “statisticus,” originally about information on the state.
Kelly Says
A statistician is like a translator between messy reality and clean numbers, deciding what to count, how, and what it all means. Their choices quietly shape everything from medical studies to election forecasts, even when we only see the final percentages.

Ethical Language Guidance
Gender History
The profession has historically been male-dominated in some regions, and women’s contributions in statistics and data analysis were frequently under-credited or framed as ‘assistants’ rather than principal investigators.
Inclusive Usage
Use ‘statistician’ for people of any gender and avoid assuming pronouns based on the role. When teaching history, include women and underrepresented groups who advanced the field.
Inclusive Alternatives
["data analyst","data scientist","quantitative researcher"]
Empowerment Note
Women such as Florence Nightingale and Gertrude Cox made foundational contributions to statistics and experimental design, though their work was often minimized in mainstream accounts.
