Definition
A tight grip around someone's neck that cuts off breathing, or metaphorically, complete control over something that prevents freedom or competition.
Etymology
Compound of 'strangle' (from Old Norse 'strangulare') and 'hold' (to grip). The literal wrestling/fighting meaning came first in the 1800s, and the metaphorical business meaning followed.
Kelly Says
While 'stranglehold' sounds violent, it's actually become one of the most common metaphors in business and politics—companies have 'strangleholds' on markets, governments have them on information—showing how fighting terminology quietly invades everyday language.
