Definition
Killing or choking someone by squeezing their neck; or figuratively, preventing something from developing or thriving.
Etymology
From Greek 'strangalē' (halter or cord), possibly related to 'strangos' (tight). The word entered English with its violent meaning and evolved to include metaphorical uses like 'strangling economic growth.'
Kelly Says
Linguistically, 'strangling' is interesting because it's one of the clearest examples of how violent words become metaphors in non-violent contexts—we talk about 'strangling' creativity, competition, or freedom, which softens the brutality of the original meaning.
