Stratosphere

/ˈstrætəˌsfɪr/ noun

Definition

The layer of the Earth’s atmosphere above the troposphere, where airplanes sometimes fly and the ozone layer is found.

Etymology

From Latin “stratus,” meaning spread out or layered, and “sphere,” meaning ball. It was named for its layered, stable air above the more turbulent lower atmosphere.

Kelly Says

When we say prices are ‘in the stratosphere,’ we’re borrowing from real physics—this layer is literally high above everyday weather. The ozone layer here quietly shields you from dangerous UV radiation every second you’re alive.
