Stuart

/ˈstuːərt/ noun

Definition

A Scottish royal dynasty that ruled Scotland from 1371 and England from 1603 to 1714, or a surname derived from the occupation of steward.

Etymology

From Old English 'stigweard' meaning 'hall guard' or 'steward', composed of 'stig' (hall) and 'weard' (guard). The Scots spelling 'Stuart' was adopted when Mary Queen of Scots lived in France.

Kelly Says

The Stuart dynasty gave Britain some of its most dramatic royal history, including the English Civil War, the execution of Charles I, and the Glorious Revolution. The spelling changed from 'Stewart' to 'Stuart' because French has no 'w' sound.
