Substation

/ˈsʌbˌsteɪʃən/ noun

Definition

A facility where electrical voltage is transformed from high to low or vice versa, or where electrical switching operations are performed.

Etymology

From Latin sub- meaning 'under' or 'secondary' combined with station from Latin statio meaning 'standing place.' The term emerged in the late 19th century with the development of electrical power distribution systems.

Kelly Says

These unassuming industrial boxes dotting our neighborhoods are like the circulatory system of modern life - stepping down high-voltage electricity from power lines to the safer levels our homes can use. Without them, we'd either have no power or dangerously high voltage coursing through our wall outlets.
