Definition
The action of replacing someone or something with another person or thing; the use of one thing in place of another.
Etymology
From Latin substitutio, from substituere meaning 'to put in place of', composed of sub- (under/in place of) and statuere (to set up). The concept evolved from legal and military contexts where one person could stand in for another.
Kelly Says
In chemistry, substitution reactions are fundamental - they're how we create everything from plastics to pharmaceuticals! The mathematical concept of substitution in algebra uses the same principle: replacing variables with values to solve equations.
