Supererogatory

/ˌsupərɪˈrɔɡəˌtɔri/ adjective

Definition

Beyond the call of duty; describing actions that are morally praiseworthy but not required. Good deeds that go above and beyond moral obligation.

Etymology

From Latin 'super' (above, beyond) and 'erogare' (to pay out, expend). The concept was developed in medieval theology and later adopted in secular moral philosophy to describe acts of moral excellence.

Kelly Says

Supererogatory acts are like moral extra credit—they make the world better and deserve praise, but you're not a bad person if you don't do them. Think of heroes who risk their lives to save strangers—admirable, but not something we can demand of everyone.
