Supporters

/səˈpɔr.tərz/ noun

Definition

People who advocate for, assist, or show approval of a person, cause, team, or organization.

Etymology

From Latin 'supportare' meaning 'to carry, bear up'. The 'sub-' prefix (under) plus 'portare' (to carry) literally means 'to carry from underneath', providing foundation or assistance.

Kelly Says

Sports supporters create some of the most passionate communities in the world, with loyalty passed down through generations. The architectural term 'supporter' in heraldry refers to figures holding up a coat of arms, perfectly illustrating the word's literal meaning.
