Sutter

/ˈsʌtər/ noun

Definition

A person who provides goods to an army or institution; a sutler. Also a surname, notably of John Sutter, on whose land the California Gold Rush began.

Etymology

From Middle Dutch 'soeteler', meaning one who does dirty work or follows an army. The term evolved to describe camp followers who sold provisions to soldiers.

Kelly Says

John Sutter's Mill, where gold was discovered in 1848, ironically ruined Sutter himself - thousands of prospectors overran his land, squatted on his property, and stole his livestock. He spent years in legal battles and died relatively poor, showing how historical fame doesn't always equal fortune.
