System 1

/ˈsɪstəm wʌn/ noun

Definition

The fast, automatic, and intuitive mode of thinking in dual process theory that operates with little or no effort and is often based on learned associations and heuristics. System 1 generates impressions, feelings, and inclinations that may become beliefs and choices if endorsed by System 2.

Etymology

Popularized by Daniel Kahneman in 'Thinking, Fast and Slow' (2011), though building on decades of research into automatic cognitive processes. The numerical designation distinguishes it from the more deliberate System 2 thinking.

Kelly Says

System 1 is like your brain's autopilot - it's incredibly fast and handles most of your daily thinking, but it's also where all your biases live! It can instantly recognize faces, jump to conclusions, and make snap judgments, but it can't do math or think through complex logic.
