Tectonic

/tɛkˈtɒnɪk/ adjective

Definition

Relating to the structure and movement of the earth's crust, particularly the large-scale processes that build mountains and cause earthquakes. Often used metaphorically to describe massive, fundamental changes.

Etymology

From Greek 'tektonikos' meaning 'of or pertaining to building,' from 'tekton' (builder, carpenter). The geological sense developed in the 19th century as scientists began understanding the Earth's crustal movements as a form of planetary 'construction.'

Kelly Says

The word 'architect' shares the same Greek root as 'tectonic' - both involve building and construction, just at vastly different scales! When we say 'tectonic shift' metaphorically, we're invoking the awesome power of continental plates grinding against each other.
