Etymology
Coined by Gerard Meszaros in his 2007 book 'xUnit Test Patterns,' borrowing from the film industry term 'stunt double.' The metaphor emphasizes that these objects 'stand in' for real objects during the 'dangerous' work of testing, just as stunt doubles replace actors in risky scenes.
