Thin disk

/θɪn dɪsk/ noun

Definition

The main disk component of spiral galaxies, containing young, metal-rich stars, gas, and dust in a relatively flat, rotating structure. This is where most current star formation occurs and where our Sun resides.

Etymology

From Old English 'thynne' (not thick) + 'disc' (from Latin 'discus'). The term developed alongside 'thick disk' in the 1980s to distinguish between different galactic stellar populations based on their vertical distribution.

Kelly Says

The thin disk is where all the action happens in a galaxy - it's the bustling downtown of the Milky Way where new stars are born, planets form, and life might emerge! Our Sun is a typical thin disk resident, orbiting in this cosmic neighborhood of relatively young, chemically enriched stars.
