Definition
A main road or street open to public passage, usually connecting two important locations.
Etymology
From 'thorough' (completely passing through) + 'fare' (a journey or passage). The term emerged in the 1400s to describe roads that allowed complete passage through a town or between destinations.
Kelly Says
Medieval cities deliberately blocked most streets to stop invaders from riding straight through—only certain thoroughfares were left open, which is why old European town centers still feel like mazes today.
