Tiberius

/tɪˈbɪəriəs/ noun

Definition

The second Roman Emperor, who ruled from 14-37 AD and is famous for his military leadership but also for his increasing paranoia and withdrawal from public life.

Etymology

The name comes from the Tiber River in Rome, and was originally a family name (nomen) in the Roman gens Claudia. Tiberius was born Tiberius Nero and adopted by Emperor Augustus, making him the heir.

Kelly Says

Tiberius is one of history's strangest leaders—he was an excellent general and administrator, but spent his final years on the island of Capri convinced everyone was conspiring against him, creating an atmosphere of terror even though Rome itself was stable.
