Definition
The allowable deviation from a standard or the capacity to endure difficult conditions. In engineering, it refers to acceptable limits of variation in dimensions or properties.
Etymology
From Latin 'tolerantia', meaning 'endurance' or 'patience', derived from 'tolerare' meaning 'to bear' or 'endure'. The technical engineering sense developed during the Industrial Revolution when precise manufacturing became crucial.
Kelly Says
The concept of tolerance revolutionized manufacturing - before standardized tolerances, parts were individually crafted and not interchangeable. Eli Whitney's use of interchangeable parts with specified tolerances helped launch the American Industrial Revolution and modern mass production.
