Definition
Severe physical or mental suffering; or as a verb, to cause someone intense pain or suffering.
Etymology
From Latin 'tormentum' meaning 'twisted rope' or 'instrument of torture,' derived from 'torquere' (to twist). The meaning evolved from the twisted ropes used in torture to suffering itself.
Kelly Says
The word 'torment' comes from the Latin word for 'twisted rope' because that's what Romans used as torture instruments—they'd twist ropes around prisoners to cause pain—so when you say someone 'torments' you mentally, you're saying they twist your mind the way those ropes twisted bodies.
