The surgical procedure of replacing a diseased or failed organ with a healthy organ from a donor. Kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment for end-stage renal disease when possible.
Etymology
From Latin 'trans-' meaning 'across' and 'plantare' meaning 'to plant,' literally meaning 'to plant across.' The term evolved from botanical usage to medical procedures as organ transplantation became possible in the 20th century.
