Definition
Either of two parallels of latitude on Earth marking the northern and southern boundaries of the region where the sun can appear directly overhead. Also refers to the tropical regions themselves.
Etymology
From Greek tropikos meaning 'of or pertaining to a turn', from tropos ('turn'). Named because the sun appears to 'turn' at these latitudes during solstices. The Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn mark where the sun reaches its furthest northern and southern points.
Kelly Says
The tropics are literally named after turning points - the ancient Greeks noticed that at certain latitudes, the sun would reach its highest point and then 'turn' back. This is why we have Tropic of Cancer (where the sun 'turns' in June) and Tropic of Capricorn (where it 'turns' in December).
