Tugging

/ˈtʌɡɪŋ/ verb

Definition

Pulling something with force or effort, typically with short jerky movements. Can also refer to a persistent emotional pull or attraction.

Etymology

From Middle English tuggen, possibly from Old Norse toga meaning 'to draw, pull.' The word evolved from physical pulling to metaphorical meanings of emotional or mental pulling by the 16th century.

Kelly Says

The word 'tugging' perfectly captures both physical and emotional experiences - from a child tugging at their parent's sleeve to the tugging sensation we feel in our hearts during emotional moments. Interestingly, tugboats got their name from this same root, as they literally tug larger ships through harbors.
