Tuxedo

/tʌkˈsido/ noun

Definition

A formal evening suit for men, typically black with satin lapels and worn with a bow tie. It represents the standard attire for black-tie events and formal occasions.

Etymology

Named after Tuxedo Park, an exclusive resort community in New York where this style of dinner jacket was first worn by Americans in the 1880s. The garment originated from the British dinner jacket but became distinctly American formal wear.

Kelly Says

The tuxedo was actually considered scandalously informal when first introduced - it was a 'relaxed' alternative to white tie and tails! The style was popularized by tobacco heir Griswold Lorillard, who shocked society by wearing a tailless black jacket to a formal ball in 1886.
