Umbrellas

/ʌmˈbrɛləz/ noun

Definition

Portable canopies supported by ribs and used as protection from rain or sun.

Etymology

From Italian 'ombrella', diminutive of 'ombra' (shadow), from Latin 'umbra'. Originally used for sun protection, the waterproof umbrella for rain developed in 18th-century Europe.

Kelly Says

The first umbrellas were actually parasols used 4,000 years ago in ancient Egypt and Assyria for sun protection. In 18th-century England, men carrying umbrellas were mocked as effeminate until philanthropist Jonas Hanway popularized their use.
