Unclaimed

/ʌnˈkleɪmd/ adjective

Definition

Something that hasn't been claimed or picked up by its owner; abandoned property with no one taking responsibility for it.

Etymology

From Old French 'clamer' (to call out, to claim) and Latin 'clamare' (to cry out), plus the English prefix 'un-' (not). Originally 'claim' meant literally 'to cry out' for something as your own.

Kelly Says

Unclaimed property is a massive hidden benefit—Americans have over $50 billion in unclaimed accounts sitting in state treasuries! Most people don't realize old paychecks, inheritance accounts, or security deposits are probably sitting in their state's custody waiting to be claimed.
