Etymology
Formed by combining the prefix 'un-' (not) with 'pleasant', which comes from Old French 'plaisant', present participle of 'plaisir' (to please). The word 'pleasant' itself derives from Latin 'placere', meaning 'to please', giving us a straightforward negation of agreeableness.

The word 'unpleasant' demonstrates the economy of negation in English - rather than creating entirely new words for disagreeable experiences, we simply reverse pleasant ones. Interestingly, psychological research shows that unpleasant experiences often have a stronger impact on memory than pleasant ones, a phenomenon called the 'negativity bias'.
