Veda

/ˈveɪdə/ noun

Definition

Any of the four ancient Hindu sacred texts written in Sanskrit, forming the foundation of Hindu religious and philosophical thought. The oldest religious texts still in use today.

Etymology

From Sanskrit 'veda' meaning 'knowledge, sacred knowledge,' from the root 'vid' meaning 'to know.' The Vedas were composed between 1500-500 BCE and transmitted orally for centuries before being written down.

Kelly Says

The Vedas were preserved with incredible accuracy through an oral tradition spanning over 3,000 years - priests used elaborate mnemonic techniques including singing the texts forwards, backwards, and in patterns to ensure perfect transmission. UNESCO recognizes this as a 'Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage'!
