Ventricles

/ˈvɛntrɪkəlz/ noun

Definition

Four fluid-filled cavities within the brain that produce and circulate cerebrospinal fluid. They include two lateral ventricles, the third ventricle, and the fourth ventricle, connected by passages that allow CSF flow throughout the central nervous system.

Etymology

From Latin 'ventriculus' meaning 'little belly' or 'small cavity.' The term was used by ancient anatomists to describe these hollow spaces within the brain that reminded them of small chambers or bellies.

Kelly Says

Your brain ventricles produce about 500ml of cerebrospinal fluid daily - that's like filling a water bottle every day just to keep your brain cushioned and nourished! When these drainage pathways get blocked, it causes hydrocephalus, literally 'water on the brain,' which can be life-threatening without surgical intervention.
