Veterinary

/ˈvɛtərɪˌnɛri/ adjective

Definition

Relating to the medical care and treatment of animals, especially domestic and farm animals. Encompasses the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases in non-human animals.

Etymology

From Latin 'veterinarius', from 'veterinae' meaning 'beasts of burden' or 'cattle', related to 'vetus' meaning 'old' (referring to mature working animals). The medical profession formalized in the 18th century as livestock became economically crucial.

Kelly Says

Veterinary medicine is actually more complex than human medicine in some ways - vets must know the anatomy, physiology, and diseases of dozens of different species, from tiny birds to massive elephants! The first veterinary school was established in Lyon, France in 1761, primarily to treat military horses and prevent livestock plagues that could devastate entire economies.
