Waco

/ˈweɪkoʊ/ proper noun

Definition

A city in central Texas, United States, located along the Brazos River. It became widely known due to the 1993 standoff between federal agents and the Branch Davidian religious group led by David Koresh.

Etymology

Named after the Huaco (or Waco) Native American tribe that lived in the area. The name likely derives from the tribe's word meaning 'river bend,' referring to the location along the curved Brazos River where they settled.

Kelly Says

Before its association with the tragic 1993 standoff, Waco was famous for being the home of Dr Pepper, invented there in 1885 by pharmacist Charles Alderton. The city also houses Baylor University and was once known as the 'Athens of Texas' for its educational institutions.
