From German 'wandern' (to wander) plus 'lust' (desire), this word entered English in the early 1900s as people began traveling for pleasure rather than necessity. Germans perfectly captured that specific ache for distant places — not just wanting a vacation, but needing to move, to discover, to let your feet carry you toward the unknown.
