Definition
A promise or guarantee that certain facts or conditions are true or will happen, especially regarding the quality or title of something being sold. If the warranty is breached, the warrantor may be liable for damages.
Etymology
From Old French 'warantie' meaning 'protection, defense,' derived from 'warant' (protector). The term evolved from feudal concepts of lords guaranteeing protection to vassals, later extending to commercial promises about goods and services.
Kelly Says
The word 'warranty' shares the same root as 'warrior' - both come from the idea of providing protection! In medieval times, a 'warant' was literally someone who would fight to defend you, which evolved into our modern legal concept of promising to defend the quality of what you're selling.
