Definition
A person who comes from or lives in the western part of a country, region, or the world, especially from North America or Western Europe.
Etymology
From 'western' (Old English 'westerne,' meaning toward the sunset) plus the agent suffix '-er.' The term gained prominence during colonial times to describe Europeans and Americans in contrast to 'Orientals.'
Kelly Says
The word 'Westerner' is actually a relatively recent invention—before the 1800s, people just said 'European' or named their specific country, but as global powers shifted, this broad category became useful for describing a whole worldview and set of cultural assumptions.
