Definition
Speaking very softly and quietly, usually close to someone's ear so only they can hear.
Etymology
From Old English 'hwisprian,' possibly from an onomatopoeia imitating the sound of whispering itself; it's been in English since before 1000 AD.
Kelly Says
Whispering is nearly impossible to fully understand in noisy environments because we evolved to distinguish whispered words using visual cues from lip-reading, not just sound waves.
