Definition
A street in London housing many UK government departments, often used metonymically to refer to the British government or civil service. The center of British political administration.
Etymology
Named after the Palace of Whitehall, built in the 16th century with white stone walls. The palace was destroyed by fire in 1698, but the street name persisted and became synonymous with British government power.
Kelly Says
Whitehall demonstrates how geographic locations can become powerful symbols of political authority. Just as 'Wall Street' means finance and 'Hollywood' means entertainment, Whitehall has transcended its physical boundaries to represent the entire British governmental apparatus.
