Wichita

/ˈwɪtʃɪtɔː/ noun

Definition

A city in Kansas, USA; also referring to a Native American people originally from the southern Great Plains.

Etymology

From the Wichita word 'Kitikiti'sh' or similar, possibly meaning 'big arbor' or referring to their grass-house dwellings. Spanish explorers recorded various forms of the name in the 16th century.

Kelly Says

Wichita people were master architects of grass houses - their dome-shaped homes were perfectly adapted to prairie winds and available materials. The city that bears their name became a major aircraft manufacturing center, trading grass houses for metal ones.
