Wicket

/ˈwɪkɪt/ noun

Definition

In cricket, either the three wooden stumps topped with bails that form the target, or the dismissal of a batsman.

Etymology

From Old French 'wiket' meaning small gate or door, via Anglo-Norman. The cricket sense developed because the stumps resemble a small gate that bowlers aim to 'open' by hitting them.

Kelly Says

The wicket is cricket's most iconic symbol - when commentators say 'he's lost his wicket,' they mean the batsman is out, but originally cricketers literally played through sheep gates in village fields, which is why we still call it a 'wicket gate'!
