Wrangling

/ˈræŋɡlɪŋ/ verb

Definition

Arguing, debating, or managing/controlling something with difficulty, often with the sense of herding animals.

Etymology

From German 'wringen' or similar Germanic roots meaning 'to twist' or 'to struggle.' American use was influenced by Spanish 'vaquero' culture of the Old West where wranglers herded horses.

Kelly Says

Wrangling started as a term for herding wild horses in the American West, but has become office speak—now people talk about 'wrangling data' or 'wrangling stakeholders,' making a cowboy term into corporate jargon.
