Definition
A plant adapted to survive in extremely dry conditions with minimal water availability. Xerophytes have evolved various strategies like water storage, reduced leaf surfaces, waxy coatings, and specialized root systems to conserve water.
Etymology
From Greek 'xeros' meaning 'dry' and 'phyton' meaning 'plant.' The term was coined in the late 19th century as botanists studied desert and arid-land plant communities and their remarkable adaptations.
Kelly Says
Xerophytes are nature's water conservation experts! A saguaro cactus can store up to 200 gallons of water in its tissues and live for over 150 years, while some desert plants can survive on just a few inches of rainfall per year by developing roots that spread over 100 feet.
