Definition
A state of spiritual apathy, listlessness, or despair; one of the seven deadly sins in Christian theology, also known as sloth.
Etymology
From Greek 'akedia' meaning 'not caring,' from 'a-' (not) plus 'kedos' (care). Early Christian monks adopted this Greek term to describe the desert-dwelling despair that could afflict the spiritually committed.
Kelly Says
Medieval monks literally invented the psychology of depression: accidia wasn't laziness but a crushing spiritual exhaustion that made even prayer feel pointless—they were describing clinical depression centuries before modern medicine.
