Definition
As a verb, it means to influence or make a change in something. As a noun (mostly in psychology), it refers to a person’s visible emotional state or mood.
Etymology
From Latin *afficere* “to do to, to influence, to move emotionally,” from *ad-* “to” and *facere* “to do, make.” The emotional sense has existed alongside the influence sense since early usage.
Kelly Says
‘Affect’ and ‘effect’ confuse many learners: think ‘A’ for Action (affect = to influence) and ‘E’ for End result (effect = the result). The noun ‘affect’ in psychology is a different beast, showing on your face what your feelings are doing inside.
